BADBADNOTGOOD and Ghostface Killah - Sour SoulBADBADNOTGOOD & Ghostface Killah – Sour Soul

Combining an avant-garde, instrumental jazz and hip hop trio and a brilliant MC with a love for soul/jazz samples is a no brainer.  So, it should come as no surprise the combination of BADBADNOTGOOD and Ghostface Killah works so well.  Throw in guest verses from guys like Doom and Danny Brown, and Sour Soul is an embarrassment of riches.  The album sounds exactly as you would hope, with unmistakable Ghostface rhymes (in both topic and flow) sitting on top of a bed of soulful piano/synths, live bass, and drums.  The artists all have such a wonderful feel for each other it seems they’ve been working together for years.  Sour Soul is a great album.

Dan Deacon - Gliss RifferDan Deacon – Gliss Riffer

Electronic artist Dan Deacon’s first album since his fantastic America, Gliss Riffer goes away from its predecessor’s rich, wide open spaces and focuses more on…well it’s tough to say what it’s focusing on.  The music on Gliss Riffer is dense with ideas and is identifiably Deacon (loops created from glissando, or glides from one pitch to another), but there is so much going on it can be difficult to focus on the specifics and the album tends to defuse into a cacophony.  Despite this issue, the moments where the album opens up and allows the listener in (largely at the beginning of tracks) are quite enjoyable, and leads to a hope that repeated listens will resolve the clamor.

Screaming Females - Rose MountainScreaming Females – Rose Mountain

Screaming Females is a prolific three piece garage/punk band out of New Jersey.  Rose Mountain is their 6th full length release since 2011, and continues to merge punk and the power pop the area has been churning out since the 70’s.  This time around, though, some of the punk edges are sanded off and the album feels more straight ahead guitar rock.  Accordingly, Rose Mountain doesn’t exactly break any new ground, but it’s a darn enjoyable listen.
